Recovering Skin from Holiday Madness⎪Facial Masks

We are two days into 2015. I spent the holiday season with family and friends, and there was not a day when I didn't wear makeup. And then, there was the food. My holidays were spent eating, eating, and eating some more. Not only did I put on some holiday weight, but I also neglected my skin a little bit. So last night, I took the time to put on some clarifying mask and bring my skin life again.


To be honest, I haven't been using a lot of facial masks. That's because my skincare has been doing a good enough job in keeping the acne at bay. But there are those unavoidable times when the skin really needs that extra help. I've brought out my current favorite masks.

An oldie but goodie is the Origins Clear Improvement Active charcoal mask to clear pores. It is one of those intensive oil-pulling masks that tighten your skin and begs for moisture after you wash the mask off. The great thing is that it really helps clear the pores, but I prefer to use this on days when I know I can keep using it for more than just once a week. Why? Because sometimes, very rarely though, the intensive oil-pulling can cause some pores to turn into pimples if you don't take care of it. It's not that often, but there are times when I don't want the intensive detox for fear that it'll instigate for acne trouble. But the good thing is, if you keep us with it, it'll die them down and turn your skin into a really clear one!

So, for times when I don't want to much detoxing to go on and I just want the entirety of my skin to look better and clearer as a whole, I like to use the GlamGlow ThirstyMud Hydrating Treatment. This isn't necessarily to clarify the skin, but I often find that injecting hydration into the skin leaves the skin feeling much more healthier and softer-- and therefore generally clearer and better! This mask has got to be the best out of the GlamGlow masks. I love that you can leave it on for hours on end, and you can either rinse it off, massage it in, or wipe it off. I prefer to rinse it off, but in flights, I'd probably leave it on during the whole flight! It smells of coconuts and it really is a easy effective mask to use because you don't have to rinse it off after ten minutes. #lazygirl

Another easy facial mask is the Dr.Jart+ Pore Medic Pore Purifying Mask. This is serum-infused to tighten and tone the face. When I think of detoxing and clearing out the pores, I don't usually think sheet masks will help. But I was wrong with this. It doesn't suck out the oil out of your face, but it does the clearing and tightening the face thing. You wake up with a more ready set face. How it clears the face is by reducing the excess oil without overdrying, and that's a good thing.

Finally, another soft detox mask is one from ISOI. It is again from their "1st class Bulgarian Rose" line and it is called Oil-Control Pink Pack. I love slathering a thick layer of this on my face. Unlike the Origins detox mask, this ISOI mask is a milder kind. I know I can use this without any concerns that it'll overdry or instigate the undersurface pores to turn into pimples. It truly helps the excess of oil the next day without feeling that your skin is too dry. The consistency feels like Dr. Sebagh's Breakout Powder and Cream and in some sense it does a similar job.

Last night, I actually used the ISOI Oil-Control Pink Pack and this morning, I am feeling all energized and clear and my skin is feeling great! I am slowly recovering from all that holiday eating.

HELP ME kit by Dr.Jart+

This Dr.Jart Ceramidin Starter Kit is the absolute best.

I've never heard of "ceramidin" before, but whatever it is, it is amazing for the skin. This duo kit has one liquid product and one cream product. The liquid is step one, and it immerses into the skin and makes it moist and supple. Then you apply the cream on top (tube) and it kind of seals the moisture in.

These two products are said to provide all-day moisture protection. It is enriched with creamed 3 and sea-butter to soften, moisturize the skin. The "cera-barrier" ensures comfortable, soft skin and long-lasting hydration. And finally, it enhances the skin's natural strength and function.

That mini explanation is right off of their box description, and without a doubt, all of those are true. I was worried about cutting down my skincare routine to just two products, but I really wanted to give this a try. By the first application, my skin felt no tightness and it was so super soft. My angry acne died down, completely. And what is this ceramide thing that locks in the moisture?! It must be some magic potion I just never heard about until now.

This simple two products have changed my skin drastically. I love it. And the products just seep in and disappear, but the hydration? Does not disappear. I usually get really uncomfortable and tight skin day and night, but this is enough for both day and night. I know people like to have something heavy at night, but this seems to satisfy the night time skin as well!

I'm definitely going for the full-size of both, although I love this starter kit size and design! If you haven't tried it, I recommend this 10 out of a 10. It is seriously so good. I wanted to give it a good try, and now that I'm almost done with them, I feel I can honestly tell you that it has been just this all month and it's improved my skin... a lot.

Hydrate and lock it in. NO residue. ALL day hydration. Glow and softness? Yes.

Discovery Product #7. SPECIAL HEALING POWDER as a PRIMER

This is for the peeps who have been having trouble keeping their makeup on... on those days with the hormonal breakouts! I'm here with a good news :)



I took an endlessly horrible skin week to find something that would help me look decent and presentable. I have been having such bad skin after I came back from California. Don't know what it is, but when I was in Cali, my skin was behaving so nicely and right when I come back-- it's completely gone!

After doing my usual routine, I decided it was time for change. I did switch up my skincare routine, which helped my skin immensely but something else that has been helping me look quite good-skin'ed is a new healing powder that I've had for a long time, stored away in my cabinet.

It is the Mario Badescu (can I talk about this brand enough?.... no!) Special Healing Powder. I bought this, opened it, and found it made the biggest mess and so I had stored it away. Perhaps I used it twice before, each time saying... "it's good, but it makes such a mess!" and not using it again.

But recently, my skin has been producing so much oil and I was getting painful acne around my chin. I tried hydrating my skin, detoxing it, and doing all sorts of stuff. But nothing was really working, and even my well-beloved Benefit Porefessional couldn't keep up with my skin! Makeup was just dying on me... cracking, melting, and patching away!

So out of the blue, I thought I'd try the MB Special Healing Powder underneath my makeup... as a primer. Although it did make such a mess, I stuck with it. I powdered my face and I did look a bit like a clown! But after I powdered my face evenly, I then went on to apply my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer... finish it off with the Tarte Amazonian Clay Powder Foundation. Maybe I'll do a separate post on this new foundation routine, but seriously... effective.

The Special Healing Powder is this loose greenish powder. It says on the packaging that: "it is a sulfur based powder that will help not only control excess oils and reduce redness, but will also disinfect and heal blemishes."

I recommend it for the oily-sensitive skinned gals, or for those that are going through that skin-irritation caused by hormonal breakouts period. The green powder, as a primer, helps reduce the redness in the face. Then, when you apply foundation you will see that you skin looks so much healthier, velvety, and the makeup lasts so long.

And what is better than knowing that underneath the makeup you have on (all day, even) is this Special Healing Powder that is constantly working to heal your irritated skin? It reduces oil indeed! And helps with the pore coverage! And, it disinfects and HEALS blemishes.

I don't care if this powder gets everywhere and makes a mess! If this is the result that I am getting, I'm sticking with it! xxx

If the applicator is too much of a hassle and mess, you can use a brush or what not. Also, I know some people use this on top of makeup to set it! I find that using it underneath is the best and when I do that, I don't need to reapply it on top. Also, don't be surprised at how powdery this is! I bet you will all look like a clown after applying it haha. But stick with it and keep spreading it out evenly. Make sure to use it sparingly of course. You don't want to overdo it or you might dry out your skin a bit too much. If you apply this after makeup, make sure you use a BRUSH and dust it maybe in your t-zone area. Don't use the pad applicator that it comes with or you'll end up with blots of green powder. But if you are using it underneath, no worries if you look cray. You just need to go through your next step in apply foundation. Then the green dissolves :)

REVIEW: Mario Badescu's Drying Products

Drying for the right reasons, I would say. These "drying" products from Mario Badescu are pretty amazing for people who suffer from congested, acne-prone, oily-combination skin. At first, I was wary of this range. I am against using acne products, even though I have acne-prone skin. I have found that using "strong" products broke me out more. 

Drying Cream

But these were very different. First off, I want to talk about the Drying Cream which I have loved the most out of this range. I apply it only at night, and after my general skincare routine. It is the last step in my night-time skincare routine, and this is because the consistency of the cream is really thick. Also, if you put it on, it says you have to rub it into your skin until the whiteness of the cream goes invisible. I find that the "whiteness" doesn't completely go invisible, but you should rub it gently into your skin until it somewhat fades enough. 

What I love about this cream is that it does some kind of magnetic oil-pulling. I used to have little tiny oil bumps(?) all along my chin. You couldn't see it indoors, but when I took HD pictures, or when I was outside under a strong sunlight, you could see the bumps. After using this, I found that it literally sucked them dry. (ew?) It's almost like an overnight mask. 

After using this cream overnight, I find that my skin is just so much softer and smoother, which I found amazing since I thought it'd dry my skin the wrong way! When you wash your face the next morning, you will find that when you wet your skin, the cream washes off. As it washes off, it feels like it took away the excess of oil-buildup. 

Drying Mask

This is my new "detox" mask. I used to go crazy over the Origins Charcoal Detox mask, and though I still love it, this new Drying Mask has been doing wonders! Like the Drying Cream, this mask does a magnetic pull of unnecessary oil buildups. The consistency is so weird, and it smells horrible. But the effects are amazing! It feels like rubber, and you almost have to break it to scoop it out and put it on your face. It feels like rubber and smells like rubber too. 

But if you can bear the smell of rubber, I highly recommend this. I find that it wipes my face completely clean of any buildup. I leave it on for about 20 minutes, and when I wash it off, it seriously leaves my skin "squeaky clean". 

Do make sure that after you do this mask, you follow up with a good and gently toner, and a great hydrating moisturizer. You don't want to just leave your skin clean without replenishing it with the right nutrients!

Drying Lotion

This is probably the most well-known and loved product from this line. I, however, am not a big fan of this one. It is one of their spot treatments. I never was one to fair well with spot treatments, from any brand. Though I like this after a pimple pop(?), to lay this potion over, I don't find that it does anything spectacularly effective.

You are never to mix this. What you do is, take a cotton bud (q-tip), and dip it all the way in until it reaches the sulfur. Then you slowly pull it back out. Then you dab that pink liquid on your pimples or spots. It is meant to bring those down and get rid of them. I never found this to get rid of my pimples, though it did help sometimes to bring them down. 

If you were one to avoid acne products but you still suffer from acne, do give these a go! They are wonderful and they really do the job. As long as you use moisturizing and hydrating products with them, I think they would do wonders.

My Beauty Picks #5⎪February

February has been about missing the summer. Makeup was all about orange. It involved constant obsession with Giorgio Armani's lip pencil in no. 6, a hot vibrant orange. You can read more about it here. If you pair that with the Hourglass "Muse", which is a neon coral, you'll get that perfect summer shade.

As for blush, Shu Uemura blush [read here] in "Soft Orange 542" has hit home run for me. Orange has a tendency to make you look tan-n-er but because this particular shade is so light, it has the affect of brightening the face. I recommend to people who are tan, and are afraid that this might be too light. What I love about it is that the color stay power is amazing! You know how makeup gets oxidized throughout the day, and soon the color you saw when you first applied by the end of the day, looks like a different color? Well, this blush is amazing because the color you first see is the last color you'll see before you take it off!

MAC eyeshadows are still a bit daunting. There's just so many to try, use, experiment with. I'm slowly getting a feel for what suits me. I find that it's not enough to go off recommendations, but to really try them and see if they suit your skin tone. Two particular eyeshadows have been en pointe for me. First is the MAC "Soba" which is a brown-tan gold-shimmer eyeshadow. Perfect for defining the eyes without making you look like you have too much going on. It's soft, and it'll do the slight defining you need- and sometimes LESS IS MORE. You add mascara to your eyes, and you are set. 

Another shade that I've been loving wearing on its own is MAC "Paradisco". Such. a. pretty. shade. I would've never imagined picking this one out of their many colors to buy! After much research and swatches, seeing it on people with similar skin tone as me, I went for it. Although it looks like a scary pink-red, when you swatch it you'll see how soft it is. What I do is dust this all over my lids, very lightly. What you get is the no-makeup-makeup-look. A soft eye that has a slight pink but barely there look, and somehow, it works. If you want something natural yet feminine, try this one out! I love the effects of it so much. 

Then, for the final summer-reminsciencing product. Burberry Sheer Concealer No.2. Not only is the color highlighting, but something in it (pearls maybe?) helps the face look young, glowing, and healthy. Gotta love that, right? 

In terms of skincare, I've got to give a round of applause to two particular products: IPKN "Pore Fresh Cleansing Foam". Best detoxifying cleanser by far! I got off of foaming cleansers after the beauty world has informed the world how bad foaming cleansers can be on the skin. I went for gel cleansers, balms, oils, etc., But what I took this product out for a try, I put the rest of my mild cleansers away. Because, this did the job. I haven't used clay masks ever since. There was no need to, because this did what cleansers are supposed to do.

Take the guck out. 

Another product that blew me away unexpectedly was Mario Badescu's "Drying Cream". [read here] I mean, I know Mario Badescu always gets it right, but I didn't expect it to get it this right. I don't know how it does what it does, but it's a miracle product. It gets all those fine oily bumps on your face. It does, I swear. This cream kind of soaks up all the nasty oil heads, and soon you are left with a clean bump less layer of skin! I usually apply this only at time, since it is a thick consistency- even when you put very little on. You take a little, rub until invisible. Your face gets a bit white because of the product. You sleep, wake up the next day with a smooth skin. Within two days, small little bumps were gone. 

I call that a miracle.

Mario Badescu Haul

Mario Badescu is a skincare brand that I kind of swear by. I haven't tried everything they have, but whatever I did try, I ended up really loving. It's the kind of skincare that is a dream for sensitive skin people. I love that they have labels on their products, targeting certain skin types. I am a combination, oily, and sensitive skin at large. The labels I look for are C, O, S.

This skincare brand is also celeb-certified. And what I love is not only their ever so effective products, but also their affordable prices!

Recently on www.hautelook.com they featured Mario Badescu and so I thought it was time to stock up and try new things. I ran out of moisturizers and I have been out of their toners for awhile. Currently I am using the Pixi Glow Tonic toner, but I have been missing Mario Badescu's toners for awhile. As for moisturizers, I just ran out of my Missha Super Aqua moisturizer, so it was good timing when this Mario Badescu box got delivered to my front porch!

I bought a Acne Control Kit that featured: a large bag filled with, dry cream, dry lotion, dry mask, acne facial cleanser, special cucumber lotion, a small mirror, and bath sponge.

Then on the side I bought their: Seaweed Cleansing Lotion, Special Healing Powder, Hylaronic Eye Cream, Vitamin C, and Aloe Moisturizer.

Antipodes. Aura Manuka Honey Mask

This is rising to the level of a must-have, staple skincare for me. Again, if you've read my recent blogpost, you'll know that I am going through some severe skin journey. Sigh. But, that aside. Let me tell you about this amazing mask that has been saving me the past few weeks.

It is the Antipodes Aura Manuka Honey Mask. I actually bought this months... I mean, months ago. But, after using it once or twice, I decided it really wasn't worth all the hype (amongst British bbloggers, mostly).

How wrong I was, because when I picked this up again a few weeks back, I was taken aback by how amazing the results were!

Antipodes is a New Zealand certified organic and natural skincare line. This Aura Manuka Honey Mask can be used all over the face after cleansing and dried, or as spot treatment. I prefer to use this as a proper mask.

The results of using this was most definitely all of the following: brightening, calming, hydrating, and spot treatment. All four results were really obvious.

This really creamy smell glides on beautifully on the face. It doesn't set like some clay masks, but remains somewhat cream-like. You can then rinse it off with warm water and voila!

What's Korean Beauty Without BB Creams?! (Korean Beauty Haul #2)

Thought I'd give you a view of the NYC skyline! :)

What's a Korean Beauty Haul without BB creams, right? I think I'm doing these Korean Beauty Haul posts in order of how much I love them. The first post was on the CathyCat liquid eyeliner and I gave a good thought and I thought it had to be the BB cream this time around.

I went for just two. It was hard because BB creams are everywhere. You are easily left with choosing amongst 20 different kinds of BB cream, even within a single brand. I narrowed down to these two and I absolutely love them. It's the Missha Signature BB cream and the Dr. Jart Ctrl-A BB cream.

Just to give a brief history: I used to wear BB creams all the time, however rarely on its own. I suffered from severe acne and so I would never wear BB creams on its own. So, I would wear it as a base to my foundation. Most of the BB creams I had were not pigmented like foundations and so they were more of a tinted moisturizer. Since BB creams are ideal for "blemished" skin and acne skin, I thought I could cover and heal my scars at the same time. However, once my skin started to improve, I decided to take a layer off my face and just stick to foundation only. It's been years since I've bought BB creams.

Since my skin has improved so much, I can now wear the BB creams on their own. So, these are ideal for days when I want to go out, just to the grocery or just somewhere quick. No need for foundation and brushes. This is like an extra step to a skincare because you can take a pump, spread it with your fingers and apply easily all over the face. Then you get all of the SPF + blemish balm + coverage all at once.

The Missha Signature BB cream has won so many awards. After trying it on in the store and finding it had such a smooth finish with really good coverage, I decided to give it a go. It was also 1 + 1, so buy one get one free. Usually BB creams don't come in any shades, but this one came in two. One regular light shade, and one a bit darker. Because BB creams blend in really well, you don't need it to be an exact fit. Because I am much tanner than the majority population of Koreans (seriously, they are all so fair!) I bought the bit darker one.

This Missha Signature has really good coverage I realized. It is no foundation, but it can easily be one of those lightweight foundations. It has a really light and natural finish, and it just feels so easy on the skin! If you look carefully, there is a swirl of a white/whitening cream + the foundation-color. I didn't realize until I took pictures to blog! You can see that when it pumps there is white and skin-color mixed together. Of course, they blend together as you apply on the face! Like all BB creams, there's SPF, and that's perfect for the summer. The whitening helps the skin look more radiant as well.

The Dr. Jart Ctrl-A is a BB cream specifically targeted for acne skin. Although I don't suffer from severe acne anymore, it is a good feeling to know what you put on your face is not only covering but also healing at the same time. It is oil-free and really, super lightweight. It feels like you are applying water on the skin. Unlike Missha, it only has one shade. That is the way BB creams normally are. But, even if it is one shade, somehow it adapts to your skin tone. At first it may apply slightly white/ashy but blend it in and you get coverage and the brightening effect! Surprisingly, even though it is super lightweight and watery, there is actually really good coverage. I would hate to make my face look like I have something on, but without any productive effect to it. This gives just that natural amount of coverage that makes my skin look clearer but also natural and radiant! Love!

So these two are my favorite BB creams and I highly recommend them to those who want oil-free, light-weight, natural finish that also gives really good coverage. No one does BB creams as well as Korean beauty products do! :)

BREAKOUTS!

I haven't been talking about skincare much. However, there are a few things here and there that are worth a bit of mention I feel! Of them is the following:

During the end-of-the-year sale at SPACE NK, I went crazy. They were having an 80% sale on selected items and those items were pretty good. Apparently, I wasn't the only one. I put about 15 items in my online basket and by the time I was ready to checkout, more than half of them were sold out. I mean, I'm talking about Tocca candles for $8. Seriously?!? But all the candles I added to my cart were never sent to me. They were instantly sold out. It sucked even more that I didn't get to know I wouldn't be getting it UNTIL the only batch I was to receive actually came, with that disappointing notice that the rest were gone. Okay, still I was able to pick up TWO of these Dr. Sebagh BREAKOUT powder and cream. I never heard of this before, but the title was good enough for me. Then I saw this thing was selling for about $90 and I thought... it must be of some good value, right? (a bit materialistic, I admit). But it was on a super sale... something like $30? Come on, it doesn't hurt to try?

So I received it, read the directions, and read up on some of the review. It seemed pretty fantastic. The cream is a really really thick cream. You are given about six(?) powder tubes. What you do is take about .5 powder and an equal amount of cream and mix it up together. Then you apply soothingly all over your face.

The thick paste like consistency did not feel drying. I thought it would but surprisingly, my felt no tensing at all! And seriously, it keeps oil away. The next day after I applied this at night, I had less oil production! They recommend you use this cream and powder combination at night time. Then, during the day, since the cream might be too thick, you can mix a bit of powder with your own moisturizer. I've tried that too and it feels wonderful!

Activate by mixing the powder with the cream to let this potent formula clear, calm & mattify a problem skin. For the best skin balancing results use Breakout Foaming Cleanser morning & night, and the Deep Exfoliating Mask twice a week.

I don't try to use it day and night, first because it's pretty expensive and I just don't know if I could afford this when it's not on sale....... and second, because I have my usual daycare skincare. If anything, I use this when I feel especially oil or when my hormones are working up! I think this would be great in the summer, but I have yet to await the coming season.

So far so great. Only problem? The price, but hey. If you're up for something that keeps breakouts at bay, keeps oil levels down, and helps your overall skin... maybe this expensive combo is worth it!

Stila's Perfecting Concealer

Conceal! Conceal! Conceal!

Concealing, covering up, and putting on an illusion that something isn't there... isn't a credible character in real life. However, it is the most welcoming idea in the makeup world. Those lucky people out there with flawless skin, I envy you with all the beauty envy within me. Covering up and concealing blemishes, scars, etc., have been such a nuisance. Fortunately, I don't have dark circles and so the need to fix up that bit is null for me. 

I've searched for a good concealer, one that would literally erase the pigmentation. Most of the ones I tried were the paste-y kinds. They were great when put on, but you know you can't dap bits of them on your face and hope to look... well, normal. You always have to blend and make sure those concealers don't just sit on the spots. That can well attract attention to that spot! And I found that paste-y ones often were great when dapped on, but with a little blending here and there, were soon gone. Then I'd apply and apply until it was cakey right on that spot. It felt like a heavier foundation and wasn't doing the job of erasing and staying put!

Awhile ago, I came across this concealer neglected in some corner of my sister's room. She must have forgotten about it, and I thought I might as well give it a try. After two tries, I decided I'd adopt it and keep it for my own :) It was the Stila Perfecting Concealer. 

Unlike the ones I've tried, this was a bit more liquidy. It comes in a tube as such, which I find is so much more sanitary. When you use a concealer from a pot, you're putting your fingers in and out of that stuff, applying it on your spots that are probably more sensitive than other areas. I am one to constantly fix up my face, and just the thought of touching my face and sticking my fingers into that pot just doesn't seem sanitary enough. So, the whole tube idea was quite appealing to me. 

The product itself is really great. It's, as I said, more liquidey than the concealers I've tried before. Somehow, that makes applying more natural and it stays on for so much longer. I use a small brush to dap it on my face. Then I blend it ever so slightly and voila! It erases the pigmentation. I also find that it lasts much longer than other concealers. The exact time, I can't say but all in all, I found it lasted much longer than expected. Because of the handiness of the packaging, I wouldn't mind taking this in my bag and appealing where needed throughout the day. It is quite natural because of the consistency and efficient in concealing! I've also tried using this to conceal dark circles (on my friend) and it worked really....... well :) It's an instant brightening. But, make sure you get a bright/light enough shade to do the work. 

Thankfully my sister allowed me to keep it. Her skin has gotten quite nice recently and she found little use for it. Now it's mine and is being very appreciated :)
