Ranking my Most-Loved Foundations!

I've never done a just-foundation blogpost and so I'm excited to be sharing with you my favorite foundations. Seriously, my favorite of the so many I've tried! And, I'm not going to just end there. I'm also going to rank them from most to least, although it's going to be really hard. So please don't end with the numbers. Read the descriptions as well :) It's because I love them all!

As a reference, let me tell you about my skin. This foundation works for me and I have combination/oily skin, blemish-prone, light to medium skin tone, with yellow undertone, and I like to wear my foundation .5- 1.0 shade lighter than my actual skin tone, but nonetheless it must not look like a mask because of the difference of color from face to neck. Now, here are the list of my favorite foundations ranked amongst themselves.

  1. Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover, Shade 03 Creamy Vanilla
  2. Nars Sheer Glow Foundation, Shade "Fiji"
  3. Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation, Shade "Bamboo Beige"
  4. Chanel Perfection Lumière, Shade 20 Beige
  5. Jemma Kidd Light as Air, Shade 02 Light
Now, here are the swatches so you can refer to them as I talk about them:

Let's begin with my favorite foundation of all time, and forever time. Estee Lauder Double Wear Maximum Cover. The shade I have is 03 Creamy Vanilla. This foundation is the best of the best. I did write a whole blogpost on it, but it definitely wasn't my best. I say that because the post doesn't portray how amazing this foundation actually is. Since trying this foundation I have tried to get everyone around me to buy it. It's just simply the best, for those specifically looking for maximum coverage but not-at-all cakey foundation. It is thick but what is amazing is that it doesn't look cakey at all. Of course, all you need is a little to go a long way but whatever suits your boat should work as well! Because it is such densely pigmented and best coverage foundation, most people use it as a concealer. Blah with that! If I want a f.l.a.w.l.e.s.s. face, I'm going to use this all over my face! And, it is so long-lasting. Come summer and humidity, it just doesn't matter. It won't budge once it sets, so make sure you spread it out in small portions over the face because it does set rather quickly. I use a Real Techniques Face Expert Brush to apply and it's like a match made in heaven :)

Next up. Nars Sheer Glow in the shade "Fiji". Seriously, this foundation is a forever repurchase. Again, amazing coverage and the glow it gives the face is nothing overdone. It's so subtle and the glow looks more like a radiance from beneath the makeup! It gives you a young and fresh look. This foundation doesn't last nearly as long as the Estee Lauder but with a primer, it should last you through the more significant part of the day/night! Another thing I like about this is that it sets just as well as the other favorite foundations on my list. That is just a must for me. I hate liquid foundations that never set and just stray on your face. Yuck! Since I have oily skin, setting to a either powder or solid liquid (?) is of paramount importance. That way, it doesn't feel like your skin is wet, especially in the summer humidity! Interesting thing is that though it is the most watery out of all the other foundations (like it can literally run down your face/hands when you put some on), it sets perfectly! I use the Real Techniques Buffing Brush for this, since it's more watery. Love them together. I talk more about this foundation here.

Laura Mercier Silk Creme is lovely for medium-full coverage. I like foundations to actually lay as a flawless foundation for whatever needs to go on top: blush, bronzer, eyeshadows, etc., Nothing looks good without a good foundation! So, this is a similar consistency as the Estee Lauder when you first pump it out. It's thick and dense. But again, it will smooth out like silk on the face and give such a natural finish! Nothing cakey at all. Unlike the Nars it doesn't have a glow, but it isn't completely matte either. It's just... well, natural. The very slight downfall is the color range. I had such a hard time choosing the shade because what it seems on the hand swatched changes over time. Meaning, on the face applied, the color is darker than it just seems. I have the shade Bamboo Beige, but if you see the swatch you will see that it is much darker than the rest. Over time, that darkness is more obvious. When I use this shade, I make sure to use a lot of under-eye concealer to brighten certain areas! I apply this with my Real Techniques Expert Face Brush. You can read my first blogpost on this foundation here.

I haven't talked about this foundation in awhile, and that's because I haven't used it that often. But nonetheless, every time I use it I think, wow Chanel just does everything right. The Chanel Perfection Lumiere Foundation gives again great coverage. I can't say that it is "full" as Estee Lauder or Nars but more on the borderline between medium and full. What I love about this foundation is the finish of it. It is completely matte. For all those who want to get rid of any kind of shine on the face, this gives that perfect matte look without the effect of cakiness or heavily-done makeup. It just looks like you have naturally matte skin! Also, the smell is that lovely Chanel scent and even though it's liquid it feels like powder once it sets. How lovely, so after it sets (which again, this sets quite quickly) you almost feel like there's nothing on the skin. The downside? Price!

Lastly, it is the foundation I love the least! It's Jemma Kidd Light as Air foundation, which is a medium-full coverage foundation that actually doesn't sell anymore! So, I was wondering what was the point in blogging about it anyway if you readers can't even go try it :( But still, I do want to feature all the foundations that have and use so... forgive the fact that even if you wanted to try it, you can't! This is a very watery foundation, much like Nars. I think the setting time for this foundation is the longest out of the rest. It does feel light on the skin but not as light as say the Chanel foundation. The downside of this foundation is that because the brand was closing, the labeling and the actual colors were all over the place! It took me about 3 returns to get the right shade, and I'm still unsure as to whether the 02 Light shade is the correct shade! But it works so it's all good :) This finish is also a bit glowy.

Here is another pic of the swatches without flash (a bit shakey I'm afraid!):

The Nars and Chanel foundations have almost the perfect color match together, but because of the finish difference, the Nars blends into my skin a bit better. The Laura Mercier is the darkest and though I can still wear it without looking weird, I'd rather go about 1.5 shade lighter than what I have! It actually looks even darker in real-life than in these pictures! The Estee Lauder works very well for me. The Jemma Kidd seems to be the redder of the rest! On the face, it doesn't seem that obvious though :) My favorite shades are: 1 2, and 4.

So there you go. That was my full-on ranking of my favorite foundations. I've tried a lot of foundations, and they are definitely products I would repurchase again and again! I hope the color descriptions also helped, oh, and what kind of brush I use to get the best finish.

If you have any questions, leave them down below and I'll try my best to answer them :)

What's in my Makeup Pouch

An unedited version of "What's in my Makeup Bag" meaning, there's going to be random bits. The reason why I left it unedited was because the things that go inside my makeup bag depends day to day. Lipsticks always change. Face powders change as well. Some days I'll add a mascara, or a blush. Other days, I probably just have a hand cream in it. So, that being said- this video is more to show you my beautiful makeup bag that I got from Tory Burch (ON SALE!) then anything else :)

I've been wanting a Tory Burch bag for so long, but whatever I wanted was either sold out or not on sale- and when these things are not on sale, they are pretty pricey. I love the medium sized ones, and luckily I found this mint/aqua green striped makeup bag at Bloomingdales. One left. On sale. So, of course, I picked it up.

Here's what inside:

The list:
Elizabeth Arden 8hr Cream
Jurlique Jasmine Hand Cream
Jouer Mineral Powder in Perle Naturel
Burberry Lip Mist in Copper 202
MAC Tart & Trendy lipstick
Starbucks mints
Maybelline Age Eraser for Dark Circles
Travelo
Honest Lip Balm

Wearing on my nails:

NOTD pour les Whimsical Souls

I recently got my first manicure, ever. I had never found the reason to pay anything more than $1 for manicure because I always found I could do it by myself and have it look good enough. On top of that, I didn't have any cuticle problems. No nail troubles. That is, until I started actually wearing manicure almost everyday. I'm just sighing thinking about how ruined my nails have become ever since wearing them so often! I tell myself I should just take a break but, can't seem to resist!

Anyway, long story short. That led me to go get some help and clear it all out (temporarily of course). I decided to go for what is becoming my new favorite nude shade from Essie called Topless & Barefoot. It is the creamy beige pink that I adore so much! Along with the mani, I also got a pedi which wasn't my first time and which again has reminded me that I need to get a pedicure at least every few months!

right after the mani :)

But because I got a regular mani and since Essie nail polishes aren't going to last you a whole week, I thought, before it begins to fade and chip, let's protect it. I was on Instagram, cruising through, when I saw Catbird's picture of a really pretty mani I wanted to try on my own.

With the underlying nude-pink underneath, I took Deborah Lippmann's Boom Boom Pow and layered it on top! The effect? Such a whimsical effect! It reminds me of pixidust and something poised at the same time :)

Also, because Deborah Lippmann's nail polishes, especially the glitter ones, last so... long on the nails, I thought it'd help keep the manicure on for as long as I could!

What do you think? x

One Eyeshadow is Enough

For the beauty addicts, one eyeshadow cannot be enough. It isn't feasible. But, surprisingly, it can be enough for those lazy days when you want wear less but dazzle nonetheless. I've gotten here a list of eyeshadows that you can wear on their own and still dazzle!

Giorgio Armani: Eyes to Kill
Now, these are quite the luxe items I must say! They are called soft eyeshadows that look more like a pressed pigment to me. Meaning, they do fly loose and so the package comes with a block press down thing so that you can always keep the pigments in tack. But, I must say that besides them being so loose sometimes, they are super velvety and uber-pigmented. Their eyeshadows have to be one of the best out there in the market.
  • No. 27 - craziest pink in town. A pink with hues of blue and green and gold. Sweep this on, or rather pack it on and let it glitter away!
  • No. 26- gold. you want soft velvet luxe gold on your eyes, this is it.
  • No. 24- the baddest of the smokey eyes! Seductive in it's dark brown hue with bursts of golden nuggets! Build this from right along the lash line and up, smoking it out by blending it. You'll get this intense smokey effect!

Chanel Eyeshadow Style
Need I say more about them? I've featured them on my blog before and they are crazy good. It's limited edition for now I think, so go grab some if you'd like. They are good all on their own. Why? The sparkle catches the light and contours your eyes as is. Love.
  • Moon River
  • Pink Lagoon
MAC
Not all from MAC can be worn on their own. They weren't meant to so it doesn't matter. But these two in particular look perfect on their own.
  • "Beaming" Pressed pigment- I've blogged about this before. Wet eyes on a different level. The gleam it gives isn't "sparkly" in the glittery-kind but in the wet-kind. It looks dark brown in the pan but swatched, it has the bronze, burnt-orange tone and it goes really well with orange blushes :)
  • Sumptuous Olive- I bought this because the PersianBabe on Youtube listed this as one of her favorite eyeshadows and she always pulls off the greatest looks. It is simply as lovely as she described it to be. It's a green/gold with a brown undertone. In the pan, it looks green but when you swatch it it turns brown. But when you pack it on, then the green shines through again! Lovely. It lovely on it's own because it catches the light in a way where the green and brown/gold give such a wonderful mix. So, that by itself gives the illusion that it is two colors and not one :)
Maybelline
The cheapest of the bunch but pretty darn good! It's a cream kind, and it's the brown/bronze with silver hints kind. It's pretty good. And cheap. And long-lasting. And, I blogged about this one too.
  • Color Tattoo in "Bad to the Bronze"

So, next time you don't want to do your eyes with too much pressure and you'd rather have the eyeshadows themselves do the job, try these. They make life dazzle :)

My Beauty Picks #1⎪JUNE

Ideally, I would like to do a monthly favorites. But I know for sure that I can't commit to scheduling a favorites post every month. So, until I think of a name/title to call these series of random-recently-loving posts featuring just that, I'll just call it my "Current Favorites". Bland, boring, but for sure, the products I mention won't be! :)

First off, skincare. These two are a must. I do have other products I would have liked to mention, but nothing stood out as much as these two. It's actually hard to say that my skin improved because of only these two products. It is probably the combination and routine of all that I use day and night, which you can probably get a glimpse of it here in this blogpost. Anyway, still moving on with just two to mention- both are Origins products, which I love. I've tried only a few from their range, but each time, I've been way more than impressed! At a time when even the facial specialists kind of felt irritated that they couldn't get my skin to improve fast and well enough, I thought I had to take matters into my own hands and figure out what to do. I wasn't rejuvenating, and none of the serums I was using was working. Why? Because I probably had a surface layer of dead skin that no matter how much I tried to exfoliate, wouldn't cut it.

So my first goal was: DETOX. I bought this Origins Active Charcoal Mask aka "Clear Improvements". I was hesitant to try this because my skin is sensitive and the last time I tried a charcoal mask was way back when I found some masks can strip my skin and all. But, I knew I needed to detox. And boy, am I happy I tried this out! One day, best results. So, though it says use once a week ("or as needed") I find that I cannot go a day without using this. I'm not sure if that does bad things to the skin, but for sure, it's been helping me. LOADS.

Second skincare item is the Origins Make a Difference Plus + Treatment. Best for combination skin I hear. It's the perfect combo for the mask because once I have stripped the dead dull icky layer off my skin, I tone it and then put on this hydrating treatment that kind of sorts out my skin and keeps it really soft and supple throughout the day and night. I'm not sure how it works, but it's working miracles on me so need I say more? :)

As for makeup, I've got a few! Chanel Eyeshadow Stylo in "Moon River" and "Pink Lagoon"- part of their Summer Collection 2013. I'm not a huge follower of seasonal collections, but I happened to be there when it first launched and I really liked it. That like grew to a good healthy respect for these eyeshadows! Review of them are here.

Another things pertaining to the eyes is the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind/ Eraser for Dark Circles. I am loving this thing! I have the 2nd lightest shade and I love to just chuck this in my bag and apply it throughout the day. Review of this here.

MAC Cosmetics always has something nice to snatch up. I've been obsessed with two certain lipsticks, both in the orange family. One is actually part of the Orange Collection 2013 from not too long ago! It's the shade "Tangerine Dream" which is a dreamy, true pastel orange. It gives the illusion that you are some pastry goddess. The other orange is the shade "Saigon Summer". Looks really vibrant but it's actually pretty vividly-natural. Meaning, it's nothing like a neon shade but a really pretty wearable, yet different color!

Another MAC item is their pressed pigment in "Beaming". One of my most read posts here on my blog has been the review of my pressed pigment in the shade "Day Gleam". Unfortunately, my sister stole it and just won't return it! So, I went for a shade a tad darker and actually more suitable for my skin. The sparkle gives a wet look on the eyelids, and it's simple flattering.

Blush. Summer is about blushes, as well as lipsticks. The blush I find myself gravitating towards every single summer is the Benefit "Coralista". Amazing shade. Wonderful finish. Love the gleam and shine. It's perfect. Wore it every day this summer. Strangely, I didn't even reach for it all winter and spring. But once that heat wave began, there I was putting this without end! It's a must-have. Really...

Let's talk Fragrance. You know by know, if you ever read my blog, that I am a fragrance-philia. What is that you say? Well, a word I made up meaning: fragrance-lover. I recently did a whole series of my Perfume Collection video/posts. It went down really well :) Anyway, one of the featured fragrance was the Jo Malone "Lemon Tart". Sharp citrus/lemon zest with a hint of sweetness that makes it a perfect summer scent. I am not that fond (yet) of the beach-scent for the summer. For summer, I go for something zesty, fruity, sharp, and fresh. I mean, if you live in NY, you'll know that humidity sucks and I don't know about you, but I hate to have a scent weigh me down in the heat!

Talking about heat. Whew. Who here has bangs? Because I do, and when it's hot out and you've got oily skin, bangs aren't going to last "fresh-looking" all day long. I end up usually carrying a bobby-pin around and pinning up my bangs by the 8th hour or something. But hey, I found this thing called dry shampoos something I'm sure everyone but me uses! I use the Batiste dry shampoos and this is the first and only one I've tried. So, I can't say it's the best one on the market. But it's cheap. It smells cute. And it does the job so darn well. I can have my bangs down and lookin' fresh all day long. That's something right there. Yep.

Another necessity for the summer heat is a good primer. A fool-proof primer. Hourglass Mineral Veil Primer does just that. It's a heft price and so I began with the smaller bottle so I could be sure it's as good as the reviews say it is. Indeed. Right after I used even to the last pump and scrap of that small bottle, I went and got the big chunky one. I love it, but for sure I don't love the price! ($52)

Though I live in NY, I'm also around AC's a lot. I also travel. That means I may go to places that are actually parched dry. That happened recently. But though my skin, nails, and lips were starting to chap I did not worry. Why you ask? Well, because I had my new must-have-for-handbag Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Cream with me. Best for lips and cuticles. This all/multi-purpose cream is divine.

Last for the beauty things: Jurlique Hand Cream. I have the scent in Jasmine. Love it. A bit thick and luxurious, but it will definitely seep in give your hands a really lady hands :) I recommend the smaller size though. It's never ending and not as cute as the smaller travel size!

Then for some random bit: FOOD FAVES!?
One isn't really a food. It's the Starbucks AfterCoffee Mints. They are mind-blowingly strong. Like, Altoids can't even compare! I love to pop that small mint in and be mind-blown with a minty breath and awakening the senses effect.

The other is a food. An addicting food. If you're going to try this, you better be prepared to get addicted. It's the Popcorners "Kettle" Popped Corn Chips. I'm not going to say much. Just go get it. And try it. Because in both two of the supermarkets I went to yesterday were sold out of this. Just in the flavor I wanted- the "Kettle" one. It's that good.

I didn't mention the last food in my video, but I thought I had missed a big part of the favorites out if I didn't mention it one way or the other! Anyway, that is all for now. Please follow me on Instagram for random updates and Twitter for more substantial updates! See y'all next time :)
